Nothing beats a really good grilled steak, and while eating out is good, it’s expensive. Get Steakhouse Grilled Steaks At Home with 2 simple ingredients – steak and salt.
Good steaks are expensive no doubt, so screwing them up while cooking is a serious fear of grilling them at home. A really good cut of meat can hold its own with no extra flavors, marinades or seasonings, just salt to really bring out the flavor.
These are ribeyes – my all time favorite cut! But for these 3 steaks I spent just over $30.
This method works on all cuts, I just happen to love rib eyes!
Let me assure you they were worth every penny!
So the key to tender grilled steaks is salt!
About 30 minutes before grilling time pull those steaks out of the refrigerator and give them a good covering of salt. Both sides and the edges. Cover them with saran and let them do their thing right there on your counter.
Keep in mind when salting, you aren’t just salting the surface. Take into account how thick your steak of choice is. If it’s a good thick steak you want enough salt not only for the surface but for that non-surface part of the steak to have enough as well!
So what is “their thing”? Those steaks are soaking in that salt which in turn is helping break down the proteins and fats making the steak more tender. It’s science, I don’t pretend to understand it, but I know first hand it works!

Once you get those steaks salted up and to room temperature, the next challenge is grilling to perfection. That’s where my friend Mary Beth from My Fearless Kitchen comes in. Her post How To Cook The Perfect Steak walks you through literally EVERYTHING you need to know!
Grill those steaks!
Once grilled set them on a platter and cover with foil and let rest again – they will continue cooking a little so be careful about that! Once again science plays a role here but trust the science and allow the steaks to rest.
It’s amazing the things you can learn from your kids! This is totally my son’s doing-he participated in meat judging in 4-H and learned so much. And bonus for me is that he learned this method of grilling steaks!
And can I just add that if you serve these steaks with my Foil Packet Potatoes and Onions – literally zero pots and pans clean up!
