Freezing Sweet Corn, Farm Tours and Technology Talk
All in a day on the farm!
I love sharing our farm! I love to give farm tours, answer questions, see the light come on in peoples eyes when they experience and begin to understand agriculture!
So when asked to give a one on one farm tour with a non-ag blogger I didn’t hesitate a second to invite Ashley from Simply Designing and her kids out!
We were all over the farm, from fields to tool sheds, on and off equipment, in the grain setup checking out corn, soybeans and wheat, in hog barns holding baby pigs and learning how fast they grow and out to the cattle pasture to see the momma’s and their calves.
Now while I talked, answered questions and showed off the farm what I neglected to do was take any pictures……..very out of character for me! So I had to swipe (with permission of course) the above pictures from Ashley! But you see that bottom right corner pic, the one that says chocolate dipped bacon pretzels, the one that you probably noticed first because it was chocolate and bacon and who wouldn’t be instinctively drawn to it? You need these and if you go to Ashley’s site she will share the recipe – I will make it easy….. click here on this link that is these words that are highlighted and that say ‘chocolate dipped bacon pretzels’!
While I won’t deny watching kids ‘ew and ah’ over livestock and their young is probably my favorite, I think the true highlight of the tour was talking about the difference between field corn and sweet corn.
“Sweet corn and field corn are closely related, but they aren’t exactly the same. They have very different tastes, and are used for different things. You wouldn’t want to grab an ear of field corn and plan to have some tasty corn on the cob!”
Wise words from Marybeth on her website Agricultured, in this post, The Difference Between Sweet Corn and Field Corn where she explains the differences!
But seeing the wheels turn and the light come on when I explained that every kernel of corn has a silk attached and unless that silk gets pollinated by the tassel there won’t be a kernel of corn was probably the highlight. This is true for field corn and sweet corn. We talked about the differences between GMO and non-GMO and I pointed out that while this year we were growing all non-GMO field corn our sweet corn patch was a GMO variety and that I not only fed it to my family fresh from the field but we also freeze corn in the summer so that we have that great fresh sweet corn all winter!
This is the recipe we use for freezing sweet corn:
I can’t begin to tell you how old it is, my Mom has used this recipe for my entire life! It is from a sweet lady at our small town church in Boggstown!

Do your drain the water off the corn or freeze it in water in each bag?
Freeze it in the bag with the corn!!! I’m so sorry if this is too late – for some reason I didn’t see this comment until now!!!
Didn’t know you had this blog Jennifer! Very cute – love it!
